Joan Bohls was raised on a Texas ranch and felt a spiritual connection through nature at an early age but it wasn’t until midlife adult that she was inspired to paint while viewing Monet’s large water lilies in Paris. Returning to Texas she began art lessons that lead her back to the University of Texas where she had graduated years earlier. Her introduction to Plein Aire painting was in 2003 when she took a workshop from William Scott Jennings in Sedona, Arizona. She feels that painting outdoors in nature connects nature, art and the spiritual. It’s a full body and soul experience that is inspired by nature and God's creation. She discovered New Mexico when she was 17 and worked at Glorieta, New Mexico. She fell in love with New Mexico and is grateful to be able to now live and paint in the mountains during the summers. New Mexico is truly enchanted and inspires her like many other artist.
It was one of my dreams to be able to take my. paints and set up in the Grand Canyon and paint. My husband, Kent Bohls and I stayed 4 days and it was a magical experience. The first stop viewing the canyon overlook there was a crowd of people standing silent. We were all in awe of the beauty. It was a spiritual moment for all of us together. How can you take in so much beauty.? I was nervous about trying to paint this awsome view but I jumped in and found I was not alone. There was a whole team of plein aire painters there that week competing.
I will share a few of my landscape paintings. I did 2 to 3 painting each day that are 9x12 oil. I just wanted to capture the fine art of landscape and colors/ shapes as best I could but it changed so rapidly. I would look out and within minutes everything was different. I did bring back photos to work from as well. It was an amazing few days. Bucket List as they say. Take a look at the additional page “ The Grand Canyon Plein Air”
